External hard drive issues, HELP!?

I have a design by FA Porsche LaCie external hard drive and when I connect to my computer with a USB cable either 1) Do not be recognized by the computer (no sign that says plugged in) 2) recognize a Maxtor USB device and still will not let me access what is on the hard drive. Not appear in "My Computer" and Device Manager says it is working properly. I do not understand. It was a good day's work, so I had to disconnect the computer to move to another room and when I started the hard drive, I hear it spinning and the little light is like a subway. What the hell am I doing wrong?!? I'm running XP if it will help. Thanks! For the record, I tried like 6 different USB cables.

Try that on a different computer. If the HD does not work there is fried. Sorry. if you do you have USB problems. try the USB ports on the front and see if it works.
