The first true production model Porsche - The Porsche 356

Although the Porsche 64 was considered by many as the first car produced by the society was really just a test car was never built as a production car, in fact, only three were constructed. The 364 was built by Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche after design by Erwin Komenda, to get the model of your VW Beetle engine.

The 356 was originally offered as a coupe, convertible and a roadster and before being taken off the market in 1965 has been amended several times. The models were the most wanted were the Super 90, Speedster, and the Carrera 356, often more than $ 150,000 now. The initial selling price a Porsche in the second of 1950 was only $ 4000.

Max Hoffman was the sole importer of Porsche in the U.S. at the time and I wanted a lower price, faster version for the U.S. market. In 1954, the company manufactured the Speedster 356 with a detachable windshield, seats bucket, a hood and very basic. Production peaked at 1,171 cars Speedster in 1957 and was replaced in 1959 by the Convertible D model which included a large windshield and seats more convenient and comfortable.

The 356 original was introduced in many Hollywood films and is now more $ 100,000 at auction and special purpose vehicles by private distributors, if you're lucky enough to find one.

Although Minor changes were made, the basic shape of Porsche 356 remained unchanged and its signature look is easily distinguished from others. Editions cut and convertible are made each year until 1965, but the last 356 Roadster was made two years earlier.

In 1964, Porsche introduced the popular 911, 356 vehicle production was at 14,151 and the company offering the 356 to 1965 as a low cost alternative to the more expensive 911 that was double the 356. Because of complaints from customers that the price of 911 was too high, the company came out with the 912 that provided the economic engine of the 356 and was sold in 1969.

Currently, the Porsche 356 is a desirable and respected collector classic and was named to the list of Top 10 sports cars of 1960 by Sports Car International. Today thousands of Porsche 356 owners to continue the tradition and vehicles are kept trained regularly.
