Slot Cars Come of Age

Slot cars come of age, and you can race them on a tabletop. You can feel that the car is sliding more than you want, so balance it by easing on just a touch more throttle. You have to decide, based on your practice times, whether it really was quicker to keep the car's tail nice and tidy-the classic "push" mode-or to give it more throttle and hope you could make up for the lurid, broadsliding oversteer with more speed.

The real racing, beyond the "virtual reality" of a video game, with real cars-albeit just 1/32 the size of the ones you can actually sit in. the hobby known as slot car racing in the 1960s and '70s is back, but the new cars are so realistic in both appearance and performance, and the new track so simple to assemble, that it really is a new hobby.

Today's model racing cars are perfectly detailed as the best die-cast models. There are no opening hood and little chassis detail, however, because what's under neath is a chassis that actually runs, with gear-driven wheels (all-wheel drive if it's a replica of a WRC rally car) and a 12-volt electric motor.

The 1/32-scale cars are about the size of checkbook, large enough to make detail visible but small enough to race in a bed size area (a ping-pong table top is perfect). You can re-creat the field of cars and even the track itself for Le Mans, ALMS, Formula 1, IRL, CART, WRC, DTM, Porsche Cup, New Minis, or just about any race from the 1950s to today for less than the price of a set off real race-car slicks.

Most brand of 1/32 scale cars offer very similar performance. The price of a car ranges from about $40 to $80. Most come from china (the monogram, scalextric, carera, and SCX brands) and spain (ninco, and two of the pricier brands, Fly and Spirit).

The plastic tracks snap together, so you can create the Indianapolis F1 track one month and Daytona or Sebring the next. The track itself is made by Scalextric, Carera, SCX, Ninco and Artin, and each brand offers at least four choices of curve radii to create interesting 2-lane tracks, or you can assemble a 4-, 6- or even 8-lane track. All offer lap counters and timers so you can see who really won, or simply race solo against the clock.

The cars are sold ready to run, but respond much like a real car to tire and balance changes. The slot provides the turn-in, but you must provide the steering-by-throttle control for maximum cornering and acceleration. Of course, it's the driver not the car what wins races. All you risk is your ego.
